Scientific priorities

13 September 2013 ( last update : 6 March 2014 )

We wish in particular to adress present and crucial environmental issues such as global change, loss of biodiversity and low-level chronic pollution. Our skills are centred on ecology, environment and avolution sciences. Following the definition of biodiversity, our study scales range from (populations of) genes to ecosystems and landscapes, including processes at each scale. Our originality stems from the model system we focus on: mountains. This choice was made based on local territorial coherence, but mostly because these environments and the species that inhabit them are particularly sensitive and vulnerable to global environmental changes. We are one of the few laboratories in France with a primary focus on mountain systems.

Our research is organized into four axes in parallel with four technical platforms.

Evolution, Modelisation and analysis of Biodiversity (EMABIO) :
The aim is to describe the variation of different aspects of biodiversity (specific, functional and phylogenetic) along environmental gradients and their co-variation across spatial scales and trophic levels, to study the response of species to environmental changes and the assembly mechanisms of biotic communities influenced by micro- and macro-evolutionary mechanisms. This information will be used to build robust biodiversity scenarios integrating intra-specific responses, rapid evolution and biotic interactions.

Genetic Bases of Adaptation (GBA) :
This axis aims at understanding the genetic bases of the adaptation of organisms to their environment, through the selection of genotypes that are specialised for a given environment as well as their ability to present different traits according to where they live (phenotypic plasticity).

Functioning, dYnamics and Services of mountain Ecosystems (FYSE) :
The role of functional traits in bioticinteractions between plants animals and microorganisms is investigated at a range of spatial and temporal scales, including the impacts on major elemental cycling (water, C, N) and the ecosystem services.

Pollution, Environment, Ecotoxicology and Ecoremediation (P3E) :
In links with the other axes, this axis aims at understanding direct and indirect impacts of xenobiotics (pesticides, HAPs, PCBs, heavy metals,…) on ecosystems (ecotoxicity, adaptation, resistance, effects on interspecific relationships, communities, ecosystem functionality).
