Research Interests :

My research interests cover a broad range of areas that include ecology, population genetics, evolution, and conservation biology. Its main objective is to bridge the gap between population genetics and population ecology by extending existing evolutionary and population genetics theory and methods to include more realistic ecological scenarios. The main tools I use for achieving this integration are the metapopulation paradigm and Bayesian statistics.
The integration of ecology, demography, and genetics has to occur at both the theoretical and empirical level. Theoretical integration is best achieved through the development of models that incorporate the interaction between demographic, ecological and genetic factors. The integration at the empirical level requires the development of sampling schemes that focus on both ecological and genetic attributes of populations, and the development of sophisticated statistical approaches that can utilise the information provided by different types of data (genetic, demographic, ecological, etc.).
The overall objective of my research is two-fold. Firstly, to understand the evolutionary processes that lead to the patterns of biodiversity observed in natural ecosystems. Secondly, to provide tools for the design of management strategies that will maximise the amount of genetic variability maintained by populations that are affected by ever increasing human disturbances.

The major themes of my research are :

Ecological Genetics : Development of metapopulation models to study the consequences that landscape fragmentation have on the genetic integrity of a species.
Evolutionary Ecology : Development of models to study the effect of age- and stage-structure on the genetic structure and level of genetic variability maintained by natural populations.
Statistical Genetics : Development and evaluation of statistical methods to make inferences about metapopulation processes such as colonisation, migration and population bottlenecks or expansions. The main characteristic of these methods is that they integrate genetic and nongenetic data. More recently I have begun to work on the development of methods to identify selected genes.
